The class
will provide an opportunity for the spinner to “tune up” the
wheel and for the spinner to get a “tune up” as well. The class
will look at how a spinning wheel works in general and how the
individual spinner’s wheel works specifically. The basic five
adjustments to the wheel and spinner will be discussed. Individual
attention will be given to each student to help correct problems and
find solutions to questions regarding difficulties with the
equipment. This class is designed to get your wheel to do what you
want it to do, not what it has always done. We will discuss and
learn to use the wheel to produce a variety of sizes and twists of
yarns and look at specific problems that arise in both the spinner
and the wheel. We will use a variety of wools from fine to coarse
and look at issues with commercially produced roving, top, and
sliver. We will also use carded wool and batts with an eye toward
yarn design.
