Navajo Vegetal Wool Dyeing

Navajo Dyeing PhotoStudents will learn to dye yarn utilizing 4 local dye plants from the Navajo Nation; Sage (yellow/olive green), Rabbit Brush (bright yellow), Navajo Tea (burnt orange) and Wild Carrot Dock Root (brownish orange) using potassium alum and iron mordant’s, and/or no mordant. Students can expect to dye 1-4oz skein of Navajo-Churro wool yarn per dye bath, and we will also explore over dying samples on grey/beige colored wool as well in each dye bath.

Student Materials List: Students should dress appropriately, since we will be outside for this workshop, sun screen, shaded hat, long sleeved shirts.

Please bring $110.00 for supplies which include eight skeins of Navajo-Churro wool yarns, and the usage of the dye plant materials, pots, propane burners, instructional handouts and other necessary materials for dying. Extra Navajo Churro yarn will be available for sale for $10.00/4 oz skein.
